Type 2 Diabetes in Black Canadian Populations Research

You are invited to participate in a research study examining how social and structural determinants of health influence the experiences of Black Canadians with type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a growing global health issue which disproportionately impacts Black Canadians. In Canada, Black adults are two times more likely to have type 2 diabetes compared to White adults. Black-White health disparities have been attributed to inequities rooted in historical, economic, and political contexts. However, despite ongoing efforts to address these inequities, limited research has examined how broader social structures shape the health experiences of Black Canadians living with type 2 diabetes. To address this gap, the proposed study will explore how systemic and social factors impact Black Canadians living with type 2 diabetes. The study will be conducted in two Canadian provinces—Nova Scotia and Ontario (Specifically in the Greater Toronto Area).

What is the objective of this study?

The study aims to understand the socio-demographics, prevalence of social determinants of health factors, and experiences of discrimination impacting Black Canadians as they navigate the health care system in managing their type 2 diabetes.

Who can participate?

You can participate in this study if you:

  • Are 18 years and above
  • Identify as Black (For example, African Canadian, African Nova Scotia, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Brazilian, African American, or of African descent from any country)
  • Are residing in Nova Scotia or the Greater Toronto Area
  • Have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes by a health professional
  • Can communicate in English
